Tylenol Wisdom Teeth Facts in Q&A
Tylenol before wisdom teeth removal? I'm having all four of my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow with general anaesthetic. I have a terrible headache and would like some relief. If I take tylenol today, will I still be okay to go and have surgery tomorrow?

grandpa walleye replied: "No problem. Just don't eat or drink anything 8 hours before your appointment. Good luck."

How often can you take tylenol for wisdom tooth pain? my wisdom teeth are impacted how often can i take tylenol if i need it ussally tylenol arthitis on extra stenght every 2 hours 3 hours 4 hours 6hours

Brown Sugar replied: "you need to get them removed. go to the dentist and get something stronger for the pain. Tylenol isn't going to do any good."

cassie869 replied: "ibuprofen is actually better for tooth pain, it has anti inflamitory and you can take up too 800 mg every 4-6 hrs."

Jake J replied: "never ever ever take tylenol every two hours! it causes liver damage! take ONE pill wait 2 hours if it is not strong enough wait 2 hours and then take ONE more. do not take any more that day and do not do this longer then a week! take something safer if possible. i like aleve and you need to read the lables! this info is on there! if you fin that it isnt working check the expiration date!!!!!! it makes a difference on how long the drug is effective!"

rdnek1001 replied: "IBUPROPHEN works 20 times better on tooth pain. you can take 400 to 600 milligrams every three to four hours as needed. You should not take tylenol for anything anyway, it works through your liver and can ruin it. Ibuprophen goes through your kidneys and is not half as hard on them. The ibuprophen is also an anti-flammatory which is one of the main reasons that your teeth are hurting. You might also want to try putting ice on it for like 10 minutes every 30-45 minutes too. BUT if you go to the dentist he'll give you a lot better drugs. Unfortunately these are usually tylenol based too but DARN they are worth it LOL good luck."

Motrin and Tylenol for wisdom tooth pain? Everyone keeps telling me to take a mixture of Motrin and Tylenol for my wisdom teeth pain, but no one has ever said HOW MUCH? If anyone knows how much of each to take together it would be appreciated, thanks! I do not have dental insurance or insurance of any kind so I have to wait to be seen at the local clinic. There's no telling how long it could take so I need something temporary for relief.

NICOLE D replied: "I think when my b/f had it done and i was the oh so lucky nurse it was 2 extra strength........if the pain is really bad get pain meds from your dentist."

kare34235 replied: "you will have so much pain ..just try to get them taken out"

sabrina b replied: "try and have them taken out asap, the pain is only gonna get worse, i pref-err motrin over tylenol, depends on what you're allergic to, i would take 200mgx2/3 every 4-6 hours"

Tylenol 3 and wisdom teeth? Hi, I've just had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out earlier today...and I've already taken three tablets of Tylenol 3 in the span of 9 hours..just as the bottle says, "Take every 3-4 hours when needed for pain". I'm about to go to bed, and I guess the effect of the Tylenol has worn off and I'm kind of iffy about taking one more before I sleep, because of the known side effects it may have if taken in large quantity. Does anyone know if it would be alright if I would take one more or have I exceeded my limit for the day? In case some people may need to know my body weight: 120lbs. Thank you for your attention, Greatly appreciate it!

Cierra S replied: "Instead, can you take some other type of pain med? Maybe try like 800 mg of ibuprofin. Or even 1000. Also, be sure to wake up in the middle of the night to take more pain meds. Tomorrow is the day you will be in the most pain, so you don't want to wait until it starts to take medicine. Definately take something before bed though."

mildepiphany replied: "Tylenol 3 can give you a headache. Your upper teeth probably will not hurt too much (unless they were impacted) - so it's primarily the bottom teeth you likely have to worry about. I had 2 top wisdom teeth removed recently and actually did not need any pain medication. The bottoms will be sore - throbbing. Set your alarm for 4 hours and take some more and go back to sleep. Also try bags of frozen peas to reduce the swelling. I remember pain from my when my bottom wisdom teeth were removed (awhile ago...) but I remember looking like a chipmunk much more vividly!"

Sweet Cat replied: "Take one more, it will be ok and will not hurt you at all!"

alianna_hodiya replied: "take ibuprofen. the dentist should have expalined this too you."

Wisdom teeth out of pain killer, tylenol extra strength? i got my wisdom teeth out a few days ago and im out of the pain killers they gave me, am i am to take tylenol extra strength since i cant get arefil of the pain killer?

JoJo replied: "So take the tylenol"

Mz_SO_CAL replied: "Yes that would be fine, that's what I do (I take 3)! Works like a charm. I recommend their 'Rapid Release' kind. GL!"

mullin replied: "not that i am any kind of doctor but if u take 800mg of Motrin assuming ur not allergic or anything that is the same amount they use for that kind of pain killer"

Geoffrey J replied: "If you like to be in constant pain, that's a great idea. Acetaminophen is not much of a painkiller at safe doses. It has some effect on inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, but it will never, by itself, be as effective as an opioid. The standard prescribed analgesics for wisdom tooth removal are codeine or hydrocodone combined with acetaminophen. Note that NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofin are not the same type of drug as acetaminophen. They reduce fever and inflammation, and therefore only have an effect on pain caused as a result of inflammation. While some of the pain of getting a tooth pulled is indeed inflammatory pain, most of it isn't. Taking high doses of acetaminophen or an NSAID is also extremely bad for your liver and kidneys. It's actually safer to use a narcotic painkiller for moderate to severe pain."

Lisa replied: "Take 2 Extra Strength Tylenol tonight (not any more than 2 every 4 hours - 8 total in 24 hours and NO MORE). You can also take up to 800 mg of Ibuprofen (that's Advil or Motrin). They aren't the same thing, so it's safe to take them together. Take the ibuprofen with food, though - it will upset your stomach in doses that high. Then call your doctor first thing in the morning and get that refill ordered."

Post wisdom teeth extraction: Can I take Advil after Tylenol 3? So I got my 4 wisdom teeth pulled 2 days ago. Swelling and pain are at maximum right now and there's a lot of pressure in my jaw. That's already got me worried as hell but I was wondering if you can take Advil after Tylenol 3 effects have dissipated. I know you can take regular Tylenol and Advil but this has codeine so I wasn't sure... I can't reach the dental office right now already so I thought maybe someone had an experience with this and can help? I want to take Advil cause it reduces swelling and isn't as hardcore as codeine. I get really dizzy from codeine too. The main issue is that I'm taking antibiotics and I was worried that Advil in combination with those (irritate the stomach) will cause stomach pain... help please, any info is great! Now I also have a headache. A really bad migrane actually. Is that a common thing? I did take an Advil yesterday and it helped but I am wondering whether the headache might've been caused by it cause it started shortly after the Advil wore off, it seems and got worse early in the morning.

Jammin246 replied: "Take Advil it will help. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE should you take tylenol WITH tylenol 3. You can also take naproxen sodium for the pain. If you take the advil with food or milk it shouldn't irritate your stomach. Prescription strength dosage of advil is 4 over the counter pills. You might call your dentist and just double check to make sure he is comfortable with you taking 4 advil at a time. Make sure you keep those sockets washed out with water!"

If you take tylenol cold or ibupfren 48 hrs before wisdom teeth are removed is it safe? ? surgery is tomorrow. help!

Bruce replied: "Tylenol is a better choice. Ibuprofin and aspirin may cause some blood thinning which might cause you to bleed more during surgery. To be sure, give your pharmacist a call. Never exceed the recommended dosage on Tylenol since it can cause liver damage. And don't do anything that your surgeon (or dentist) told you before surgery."

butterfly replied: "it would be very wise for you to contact your dentist to ask that to make sure that want interfere with whatever they may be administering to you it wont counteract with each other."

Ginnie Bee replied: "I can't see any reason why you would take Tylenol cold before having wisdom teeth removed. If you are coming down with a cold make sure you cancel your appointment. You do not want to be congested during that procedure. Ibuprofen is the best pain medication because it contains an anti-inflammatory and will also help alleviate swelling after the procedure. Many dentists actually prescribe a combination pain med/ibuprofen drug after surgery called Vicoprofin to help with pain and swelling. So, if you take Ibuprofen, you're on the right track. Do not take asprin--large doses cause blood to thin. And Tylenol in large doses causes liver damage."

im 23, took tylenol 3, 3 days ago for wisdom teeth, having chest pains? left arm pain? very bad?? ok so wednesday morning i had my wisdom teeth out, wednesday evening i took 1 tylenol 3 pill for the pain and got sick instantly from it and still am, puking since wednesday night. i stopped taking them after the first one, and have been having severe chest pain and pain radiating down my left arm since yesterday.. anyone know anything about this?? it hurts badly and im contemplating going to the ER after i call the dentist... i later found out the t-3 has hydrocodone as an active ingredient, which im allergic to in large doses, causes rash, hives, itching, bloating, ect.... anyone know anything?? been here?

parrotsarenoisy replied: "GET OFF YOUR COMPUTER AND GO TO THE ER!!!"

LINDA J replied: "go to the doctors what r u waiting for????? thats nothing to play around with!!!!"

Colt & Tegan replied: "The drugs have been out of your system for a long time. You may have an infection from the surgery. That is a serious risk. People with heart conditions take a preventative course of antibiotics every time they get dental surgery because of this. It may also have nothing to do with your tooth at all and you're having a heart problem. Go to the hospital and explain your whole situation."

ford_girly_2003 replied: "You should go to the doctor right away. allergic reactions can be deadly. Some allergic reactions can casue the tounge to swell and even cut off air flow through the windpipe. Most allergic reactions are minor, but not at all pleasing. The chest pain could possibly be anxiety form getting worked up about your vomitting reaction from the tylenol 3, which is probably also causing you to be dehydrated. but it's best just to see a doctor just in case. just stay calm and have someone take you to get checked out. you don't want to be driving if your syptoms worsen. good luck and i hope your feeling better soon...."

Can I take Advil (ibuprofen) instead of Tylenol 3 for my wisdom teeth? I've asked so many questions already about my medications. :P But, I'm asking another one! Okay, so I got my 4 (impacted) wisdom teeth out on thursday morning. Expecting the worst, I seemed to have gotten the best. No reaction to the IV, hardly any swelling and basically...no pain. Since then, I've been taking about 2 T3s a day. It says I can have 1-2 every 3-4 hours up to a maximum of 12 in 24 hours. But, I haven't needed that many. In fact, just yesterday I took one at around 11 in the morning and didn't take another one until 10 at night. I don't want to take such strong drugs if I don't have to. I'm already taking my anti-swelling and anti-infection drugs. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to the T3s. They're making me itch like a CRAZY person. Every 2 seconds I'm scratching my legs or arms or head or face or stomach and basically everywhere else too. It's also leaving unattractive red marks all over that look like I was attacked by a tiger. Not pretty! So, instead of taking the rest of the T3s can I take an advil if I need it? I'm planning on taking 1 now with my breakfast (it's 11:20am here) and then if I need another throughout the day I'll take it with lunch or dinner. Is that okay? I should also note that my holes only bled for a little over an hour after surgery and haven't bled since. Sooo, I don't think the advil will cause them to start bleeding again. Thanks all!

Blaze_23 replied: "Yes, Absolutely if you don't need the stronger med and Advil works for the pain, so be it. And yes, it does sound like you may be allergic to the T3."

BigOrlandoNerd replied: "I don't see why not, I really have tried to limit my T3 use after a few surgeries that I've had. For me T3s have some unpleasant side effects."

Has anyone else had to have their wisdom teeth out when pregnant? Im 31 weeks pregnant (almost 8 months) Due March 27th and my wisdom teeth are hurting terribly....the side of my face even gets swollen sometimes :( Tylenol doesnt even help any more pain wise...i went to see the dentest (two different ones a reg. and a oral surgen) and He wants to take them out as soon as possible....using only local anthestetic (sp?) The most i can take for a pain killer is tylenol w/ kodene. My wisdom teeth are moving some of my other teeth and causing a LOT of pain. Would it be wise for me to have them out this way, i have heard it is really horrible pain : (?? Has anyone else had to have them out while pregnant?? Any suggestions? thank you for your answers!

Steve N replied: "I would be afraud of infection and of the amount of pain killer that would be needed. But I don't think you can make it until march 27th without some treatment. The local anesthesia is a good idea. Take the Doctors advice."

em_19792000 replied: "i had my wisdom tooth taken out about 3 weeks after i had the baby!"

whosaidthat? replied: "I'm pregnant right now and hoping that my last 3 wisdom teeth can hold off for 6 more months. when i got the one taken out i had the gas, and novacane. i can say there was no pain during, and even afterwards it didn't hurt too bad. as long as you talk to your doctor/midwife about what you can take you should be fine. Really it's not the too much pain once they are out."

Sonya K replied: "hi, i wouldn't have them taken out until the baby has came it could be dangerous for the baby. stay with the tamer meds its probably safer for the baby and you."

Momma K replied: "I had one wisdom tooth pulled right before I found out I was pregnant. I need the other one out as well (it has a cavity and causes a lot of pain) I'm afraid to go myself. I'm 18 weeks. Although were both afraid I think if the dentist says its okay then go ahead and get it done. Trust me once that baby is born your not going to want to deal with tooth pain and a newborn. Getting wisdom teeth pulled isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. If they are impacted (still in the gums) then it may be more painfull. However if they are not. It will be sore for a day or two and the hole will bother you (i.e. food getting stuck, etc.) for about 2 weeks or so. But you'll survive. Don't be too worried about the pain meds. I wasn't prescribed any after I had mine removed. The local anesthetic does work for a few hours and tylenol may do the trick. Right now I am currently taking oxycodone (percoset) for a herniated disc in my neck. Check to see what kind of rating (A,B,C,D) the pain meds are online and then you can determine if it is safe to take. Percoset is in the B category. You don't want to take anything in the C or D category. (The rating system is for medications for pregnant women) I wish you the best of luck. And thanks for reminding me that I have to go."

freshochild2000 replied: "I would wait til after the baby is born. Even if your doctor said you could have the surgery done, there is really not much medication you can take for pain while pregnant. I don't know if doctors would even prescribe Tylenol w/ codeine if you are pregnant. I have gotten my wisdom teeth taken out, but not with pregnancy. I didn't have a lot pain. But I have known a lot of people whose face swell and are in a lot of pain. You might be more miserable after surgery. So it might be best to wait. Remember pregnancy doesn't last forever and you are almost done."

tiffanydoyle2003 replied: "I would wait. I had the worst pain with my wisdom teeth and some other teeth in my second pregnancy but the dentist said he would not do it until I had the baby because it wasnt safe. Mine however were in the bone so maybe thats why. If you can, then wait until you can have the good drugs for the surgery. I know how much pain you are in though, it is terrible. Good luck!"
